Express Issues

Old

This is the first of the First Issue Digressions, tangents which I have wandered off alongst.

First Egypt and then Russia alerted me to the fun to be had with Express or Special Delivery issues. The first was from the US in 1885: not the best, but pretty good and coming first means a lot.

Here's a list:
Cuba - Dominican Republic - Egypt - Finland - Guatemala - Mexico - Russia - USA

USA 1885
SG-E127 SC-E1
The first Special Delivery stamp.
Mexico
The first coutry to aspire to two entries on this page, the first a magnificent example of this genre, the second rather more sedate.

The first Express stamp I noticed and, perhaps, still the best of all.
Egypt
Russia 1932
SG Sc
The stamp which gave rise to this digression.
Russia
New Zealand 1939
SG-E6 Sc-E2
Finland 1944
SG Sc-B60-63
A charity stamp rather than express, but the image belongs on this page. The ambulance was the first attraction, but the whole set is shown.
Finland SG ScB60 Finland SG ScB61 Finland SG ScB62 Finland SG ScB63
Guatemala 1948
SG479 Sc-E2
Strangely, the first 'expreso' stamp was for normal services: the 10c surcharge stamp shown was the first (and only) express stamp. Presumably there was a change of mind on the charge.
Cuba 1958
