B111 Study for Tableau I (B126), 1920/21 Charcoal on paper, 95.8x61.6 cm Graphische Sammlung, Staatsgalarie, Stuttgart S-, O-, B-, BMI Owners: 1944 Harry Holtzman; 1970 Pace Gallery, NY; 1981 Staatsgalarie, Stuttgart It is curious that the catalogue gives this its own B number, while other sketches are grouped in B325 through B370. Bois, from which the image is taken, notes that 'drawings on this scale are extremely rare' (p.296). |
B112 Unfinished Composition, 1920(?) (Verso of B146 Tableau 2 with Yellow, Black, Blue, Red and Grey, 1922) Oil on canvas, c.67.7x57.5 cm B146 is at the Guggenheim Museum, New York. CR states 'the composition was cut along two, posibly three sides which makes it difficult to establish the original dimensions... The fragment exhibits the compositional pattern known from the works dated 1920.' |

The photograph showing three dresses, presumably by YSL, was used by the Hague Gemeentemuseum in publicity for their exhibition Fashion ♥ Art: A Passionate Affair, Sep 2011 - Jan 2012. I'll add more detail on the source when I find it. More on clothing here. |

Images exist from a 1921 exhibition. I think I might try reconstructions of these in due course. [Nov 2010] Here's an attempt at B119 from the Reconstruction Factory. Estimated size 76x65cm. [Feb 2011] And B118. Estimated size 63x53cm. |
B120 Composition with Large Red Plane, Black, Blue, Yellow and Grey, 1921 Oil on canvas, 48x48 cm Signed lower centre in black: PM 21 The Judith Rothschild Foundation, New York - seems to be struggling, but at least they have (or had) B20, B134 and B120. B122 Tableau with Large Red Plane, Blue, Black, Light Green and Greyish Blue, 1921 Oil on canvas, 49.5x49.5 cm Signed lower left in white on black: PM 21 Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection - the 2011 Pompidou catalogue ascribes it to MoMA, from the Gelman Collection. S627, O333, B-, BMI Owners: 1921 consigned to Galerie de L'Effort Moderne, Paris; 1924 consigned to Til Brugman ('s-Gravenhage); 1925 JH Gosschalk ('s-Gravenhage / Wassenar); 1935-47 on loan to the Gemeentemuseum; 1948 E Polak (Amsterdam); 1948 Sidney Janis Gallery; 1948 Mr & Mrs Maurice E Culberg (Chicago); 1953 Sidney Janis Gallery; 1954 Mrs Arthur C Rosenberg (Chicago); 1969 Richard L Feigen & Co., NY; 1970 Stephen Hahn (NY); 1988 EV Thaw (NY); 1988 Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection Image from the 2011 Pompidou catalogue. Green?, I hear you say, we'll have no green here. There's a colour image in the exhibition catalogue Twentieth Century Modern Masters, New York and London, 1989 I have obtained the catalogue and thereby the image. It's not very green. The catalogue makes the interesting observation that 'the red of the largest rectangle extends beyond the black line that constitutes the boundary of its upper edge - something rarely seen in the artist's work'. |

B123 Tableau 3, with Orange-Red, Yellow, Black, Blue and Grey, 1921 Oil on canvas, 49.5x41.5 cm Signed lower centre in black on blue: PM 21 Kunstmuseum, Öffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basel S458, O327, B-, BMI Owners: 1921 consigned to Galerie de L'Effort Moderne, Paris; 1923 Graf & Gräfin Kielmansegg (Weimar / Essen / Aftersteg bei Totnau); 1937 Emanuel Hoffman Stifung (Basel); 1940 Kunstmuseum, Basel. B124 Composition with Large Red Plane, Blue, Grey, Black, and Yellow, 1921 Oil on canvas, 50x40 cm Signed lower left in red on black: PM 21 Private collection S462, O330, B-, BMI Owners: 1921 consigned to Galerie de L'Effort Moderne, Paris; 1922 Léonce Rosenberg (director of the Galerie, Paris), gift of PM; 1934 James Johnson Sweeney (NY); 1986 private collection. No suggestions for a colour image, last exhibition Paris 1969. The installation photograph is from the Cubism & Abstract Art exhibition, New York, 1936. The spacial arrangement is interesting. The other Mondrians shown are B37, B79, B84 and (I think) B100, though CR is not clear on the lozenge. Temporary and approximate colour image from the Facsimile Factory. B124 was a gift from Mondrian to James Johnson Sweeney, subsequently a director at MoMA. It was sold into a private collection in 1986 for $5.1, more than doubling the previous record for a Mondrian of $2.2. More details here. |

B126a Composition with Black, Red, Grey, Yellow and Blue c.1920 Gouache with traces of pencil laid down on card, 27.8x19.1 cm Signed lower left in black on yellow: PM 20 (?) Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, Promised gift of Julian and Josie Robertson in memory of Josephine (Josie) Tucker Robertson (1943-2010) not catalogued, BMI 1111 Owners: I cannot find this in the Catalogue. I have placed it and numbered it with B126 as there is such a striking similarity between the two works. There are a few other abstract gouache pieces, notably B136 below, the sketch B362, the B167 designs for Ida Bienert, B205, the setting of Seuphor's poem, and the B178 stage set. The Robertsons are interviewed in the catalogue for the Auckland exhibition celebrating the promised gift and describe the work as "a relatively new painting for us. It was strongly recommended by our friend and advisor, David Norman, who is a vice president at Sotheby's in New York. I'm really glad I bought it." There's an entertaining piece on the exhibition in general and the Mondrian in particular here. |

B129 Tableau II with Red, Black, Yellow, Blue and Light Blue, 1921 Oil on canvas, 101x99cm Signed lower right in white on black: PM 21 Private collection, on loan to the Kunsthaus, Zürich S460, O328, B-, BMI Owners: 1922 SB Slijper (Blaricum); 1948 Sidney Janis Gallery; ? Mr & Mrs Armand P Bartos; 1964 Harold Diamond (NY); 1964 Galerie Beyeler, Basel; 1965 private collection; since 1972 on loan to the Kunsthaus, Zürich. I find this piece rather ungainly. Is suppose everyone must have a least favourite Mondrian and, even considering B56, this is probably mine. The 1965 poster was taken from an eBay auction with an excessive starting price of $400 in May 2011. The signature looks like 1928. |
B130 Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Grey and Blue, 1921 Oil on canvas, 59.5x59.5 cm Signed lower centre in black: PM '21 Haags Gemeentemuseum S456, O326, B272, BMI Owners: 1921 Jo DA Steijling (Laren); ? The frock is one of the designs which established YSL and, one supposes, helped to pay for the original acquisition. The painting is by Kenneth Paul Block, found here. Image from the Mondrian CD. I'll leave the original B&W in place as it is an interesting example of how misleading they can be in guessing the colours. |
B148 "Composition 1922", 1922 Medium and size unknown Whereabouts unknown, this picture is only known from a reproduction in De Stijl No.8. S-, O-, B-, BMI Owners: no records. There is no known colour image of this work and so a reconstruction has been attempted. |
B149 "Komposition mit Gelb, Zinnober, Schwarz, Blau und verschiedenen grauen und weissen Tönen" (Composition with Yellow, Cinnabar, Black, Blue and Various Grey and White Tones), 1922 Oil on canvas, 83.7x50.2 cm Signed lower centre: PM 23 Whereabouts unknown. This picture was in the Hannover Provinzialmuseum, but was confiscated by the Nazi authorities in 1937, presumably in their cull of 'decadent' art. S(655), O-, B-, BMI Owners: 1924 consigned to Sophie Küppers (Hannover); 1924 Hannover Provinzialmuseum; 1937 confiscated. It looks like an interesting piece with the splash of colour within the black (?) rectangle an unusual feature in the works of this time, pointing to the very late pieces, notably Broadway Boogie Woogie. There are several black and white photographs of the painting available but none in colour and so I have tried a reconstruction. The second photograph (c. May 1923) shows Mondrian and Nellie van Doesburg with B149 behind and B146 on the floor. |
