Introducing Postmodernism

Trees have been awaiting attention for more than a year, but I have been diverted to the flower pictures, Mondrian's "potboilers", by a Colin McCahon homage.

Shapiro's Mondrian: Flowers is the main work on the subject. The Catalogue Raisonné lists some in the main section of Volume I and some in Part III in the second volume under Late Naturalistic Works

Encouraged by Shapiro, I have included the portraits and more general still lifes, to which the flowers might be considered more or less incidental.

Creating the page has forced me to reconsider the works. Although dismissed by many writers as only being created because the abstracts weren't selling, and even if Mondrian resented having to paint them, I have enjoyed the research and think there are some real gems. They also played a clear role in the path towards abstraction.

This painting has an interesting history. Originally owned by Wobine C. de Sitter, who also owned B20, she gave it to her great niece, saying "It is an old one, he gave it to me before he ever dreamt of abstract painting". C34 - C153, Flowers from the Late Naturalistic Works
Very few of the "C" works are dated in the Catalogue, even when there is a date in the signature (it is frequently suggested in the notes that these were added later). Earlier cataloguers, such as Seuphor and Blok show dates for many of the pieces. I might wander through at a later stage and add dates where available.

In April 2012, The "Walters Art Museum announce[d] ... the planned gift by Robert E. Meyerhoff of 21 works of art depicting flowers assembled by his late wife, Jane B. Meyerhoff. This collection includes a selection of watercolors, pastels and drawings by artists such as Delacroix, Cézanne, Schiele, Mondrian, Matisse, Klee, Stella, Dalí and Magritte. Since Jane Meyerhoff was allergic to fragrance she could not have flowers in the house. She decided instead to collect flowers on paper. In the spring of 2007, these artworks were on view at the Walters in the focus show Floral Still Lifes from the Collection of Robert and Jane Meyerhoff... The Meyerhoffs are distinguished for having amassed one of the most prized collections of post-World War II modern masters. Jane Meyerhoff’s allergy led her to acquire this less well-known collection of floral still-life art for her own private enjoyment. The first work purchased was a Mondrian in 1991, and the last was a Magritte in 2003.", quote from a report in artdaily.

I have written to the Walters asking which Mondrian they are getting, but no reply yet. According to the Catalogue, it is C106 Two Dahlia. source

Progress:

19th Nov - page started and all numbers listed, descriptions incomplete and descriptions added, that's good work.

20th Nov - two workstreams going forward, 1. add detail for each picture (medium, size, location); 2. assemble colour images, use b&w temporarily for the rest and gradually fill in the blanks.
Entries reorganised to include details for the first half, the "A" works. Shapiro scanned but not formatted. Catalogue should be scanned tomorrow.

21st Nov - progress with page formatting, hope to finish that and scan the Catalogue images tomorrow.

23rd Nov - All images scanned from the first two sources, now the long slog of image formatting and data entry.

24th Nov - All images reformatted and Catalogue images added to the web page. Some progress on the data entry.

25th Nov - Data entry complete.

27th Nov - Shapiro images identified (all but 3) and uploaded. Check the Mondrian CD next, always good for a few images, albeit not as large as one might like.

29th Nov - It looks as though there are around a dozen new images on the Mondrian CD.

1st Dec - The Mondrian CD delivered ten new images, as noted before, they are rather small, but do the job. Some were difficult to identify against the tiny b&w photographs in the Catalogue, but I am reasonably confident that they are correct. The next source to consider is the 2007 Gemeentemuseum catalogue.
The current scores are approximately 34 of the 61 As and Bs (56%), 48 of the 120 Cs (40%), that's 45% overall.

2nd Dec - The Gemeentemuseum catalogue provided four new images, two replacements and an installation photograph. Next up, Milner and the Pompidou catalogue. That didn't take long - nothing new in Milner and no flowers at all in Popidou: I guess I should have expected the latter as it was a Mondrian and De Stijl exhibition and thus tending towards the abstract. So, I'll try Meuris and Pitts Rembert.

4th Dec - Nothing new in Pitts Rembert, Meuris, Blotkamp or the catalogue for the 1971 Guggenheim ex. A few more to check then its time to go with the available b&w images.

6th Dec - I have scanned all the b&w images in the Catalogue to provide temporary fills for all the missing images. There might be some better scans available in Marty Bax's Compleet. It will take some time to process all the scans.

9th Dec - B&W scans processed. Some need scanning again, but nearly all now have a first image to be attached.

10th Dec - Images installed, a few missing and some could be improved. Next rescans, then track down some more colour images
