As for Hawaii, I will never own a Mauritius #1 as they are so rare and expensive. An error was made (so the story goes) on the initial issue of 1d red and 2d blue - they were inscribed 'POST OFFICE' rather than 'POST PAID': only 240 of each were printed and of these only 26 are known to exist (14x1d and 12x2d) see here for further details. The subsequent issues are brilliant primitivist stamps, but still pretty scarce and there are many forgeries in existence, so I am wary of buying anything I can afford, The first inexpensive issue is from 1860, by which time the designs were "standard Victorian", though there are some possible acquisitions in 1858 and 59 - I will aim to pick up a few of those. There was a Stamps on Stamps in 1948, commemorating the centenary of the first British Commonwealth stamp - I'll get a full set of those. There was another commemorative SoS issue in 1999. Both are shown below. Page added May 2003 |
