Notes:
2.1 Mackay starts
Austrian airmails
with the 1922 republic stamps designed as airmail (C4, SG546 40p / £1.50).
Scott and Gibbons go back to 1918 overprints of monarchy
stamps.
2.2 This is clearly one I will never acquire. The illustration
from SG is of the 12c black on blue SG5 which sells for £5,000 / £1,900. This
also features on the 1979 Guyana SoS issue. Most of
the stamps from 1851 o 1867 are of similar designs, the first sensibly priced (FSP)
stamp is the 1869 1 cent black. This
is the first of a feature I will apply to the site on the second pass.
2.3 Scott #1 (SG14), the 4pf green was issued in 1856
(£65 / £24). The first stamp, Sc2 (SG4) was 1850.
2.4 The first 'real' Spanish airmail stamp was the 1929 Sc-C6
SG515 5c brown (£4.50 / £4.25).
2.5 Mackay lists the first Spanish charity stamp as 1938,
presumably the Republican issue 45c +2p with a surtax for the defenders of
Madrid (Sc-B106, SG839, 50p / 50p). Scotts first semi-postal, Sc-B1 SG394 is the
1926 Red Cross 1 c black issue (£1.60 / £1.60).
2.6 Scott's first Swiss airmails SC-C1,2 are expensive and
frequently forged overprints (C2 of 1919 predates the C1 of 1920). They are SG 302
and 303, priced at £100 / £1,100 and £30 / £95 respectively. I am happy to go with
Mackay on this occasion.
2.7 removed
2.8
Scott Classic and Gibbons Simplified both list
Schleswig-Holstein (Sc1-7, SG2-10), then
Schleswig (Sc8-14, SG24-29), then
Holstein (Sc15-25, SG51-67),
numbering consecutively. Mackay treats the three entities separately.
2.9 For Switzerland Officials, Mackay and Gibbons start in
1918, Scott in 1938.
2.10 New South Wales #1 imperfect but decidedly cheap at
$5.58 on eBay. Both Scott and Gibbons list many variations of the two plates in
various shades on a variety of papers. There is no clear
, so the best
advise is to keep looking for a cheap 1 d red.

Table 3
Notes:
3.1
The first Canadian commemorative
issue is the
½c black,
priced at £48. The next in the series is the 1d orange (Sc51, SG122) at £8 and
£2.75. I'll probably settle for that.
3.2 The Nova Scotia Sc1/SG1 is a 1d brown priced at £2,000 /
£400. Scott shows this as issued in 1853, making the more reasonably priced
Sc2/SG4 the first.
3.3 Gibbons' Trinidad #1 is the Lady MacLeod private issue for
the shipping of stamps between Port of Spain and San Fernando. Scott mentions
this but does not number it. Sc1, SG8, the 1 d brick red was issued in 1856,
which brings us to Sc2, SG2 as the first issue.
3.4 I think this is an error in Mackay - the 1914 and 1915 Red
Cross stamps were issued under Trinidad and Tobago which opened for business in
1913.
3.5 Denmark Sc2/SG4, 4 rbs brown was issued April 1, 1851.
Sc1/SG3 issued a month later, May 1 and was a local stamp for use in Copenhagen.
RBS means rigsbank skilling, of which there were 96 in 1 rigsdaler. The
FDC of Denmark's first stamp is from an auction on 24th March 2007 at Swedish
auction house Postiljonen: the starting
price was €60,000.
3.6
Tuscany SG1 (£4,000 / £900) is the 1q black, but Scott, although making this the
Sc#1, dates this an 1852 issue. Sc#2, 1851, 1 soldi ochre, is probably
SG4 (£ 6,000 / £1,200). This is interesting but academic as, at those prices, I
will not be pursuing either. The most reasonably priced stamp of the set is the
2 crazie blue - same design, same year, so that's the one I bought.
3.7 Identification of Würtemmberg's first Official is rather messy. SG-O181, 2pf
grey is Sc-O1, but dated 1900. Similarly, SG-O182, 2½pf grey, is Sc-O2 but dated
1896. That leads us to SC-O3, SG-O112 but dated 1875 by Scott.
3.8 A Canadian Beaver is essential in any first issues
collection. One of the 1852-1857 shades on handmade paper is about as good as a
#1. Failing that the perforated 1857 5c version will suffice.
3.9 For Sardinia, in addition to the
FSP, it is probably
worth looking out for inexpensive used copies of the 1851 20c blue (Sc2, SG3 or
Sc2a SG4 deep blue) as these share the same design as the #1 and catalogue at
around £90.
