Table 38
Notes:
38.1 All Cape Juby's stamps are overprints.
38.2 The three Ile Rouad stamps issued in January 1916, being
vertical overprints on French Offices in the Levant stamps are all priced at
around £3250 / £200. The thirteen stamps issued in December 1916, being
horizontal overprints on French Offices in the Levant stamps are priced in the
range 50p to £40, the first of the issue being 55p. That's the one for me.
38.3 Scott lists Baghdad under Mesopotamia. Every stamp is a
surcharge or overprint of a Turkish stamp. Scott includes a section of Officials
not mentioned in Mackay or Gibbons. All of these stamps are out of my price
range.
38.4 I cannot find Long Island in Scott or Gibbons. Woods
This is Philately explains that it is a Turkish island Uzun, called Long Island
by the Brits in occupation during WW1. They used overprinted Turkish revenue
stamps. There were also "a few hundred" primitive, imperforate, typewritten
stamps. I have asked the experts at FICC for advice.
38.5 For Ruanda-Urndi, Gibbons starts in 1916 with a set of
Belgian Congo stamps overprinted Ruanda (SG1 to SG7a), then a set overprinted
Urundi (SG8 to SG14a), then a couple of sets with other overprints (long and
short), before the 1924 issue of Belgian Congo stamps overprinted Ruanda Urundi.
The this last is the point at which Scott joins in (starting with Sc6 - I don't
know why). Rather more sensibly, I feel, Scott classifies all these earlier
issues as German East Africa under Belgian occupation.
38.6 Gibbons regards Salonica as a subset of British Levant,
under British Field Office in Salonica and given separate numbering from SG-S1.
I cannot find this stamp in Scott. British Offices Abroad - Turkish Empire
section.
38.7 For Italian Offices in China, Scott numbers Peking and
Tientsin separately, Gibbons sequentially. In both cases there were two issues
in 1917: all of the first (upper case overprint) are expensive, the second issue
(lower case overprint) more reasonable.
38.8 Given that I have not yet found Epirus in Scott, Koritsa
is also eluding me.
38.9 Gibbons begins Saudi Arabia in 1916 with sections
Hejaz (1916),
Nejdi Occupation of
Hejaz (1925), Hehaz and Nejd
(1926) and then Saudi Arabia
from 1932, numbering the stamps sequentially. Scott's approach is similar, under
Saudi Arabia with Hejaz (1916),
Nedji Administration
of the Hejaz (1925), Kingdom of
Hedaz-Nejd (1926) and Saudi
Arabia from 1934, Scott prefixes Hajaz as ScL, begins the 1925
Administration as Sc1 and thereafter numbers sequentially.
38.10 German Eastern Command in Gibbons is German Occupied
Lithuania in Scott.
