First Issues 1937-45

and aspects of first issue collecting

work in progress

I intended to display this in Feb 2008, but decided that a rethink was in order and that the occupation and other issues should be treated separately. I'll return to the subjects later.

Bexley Philatelic Society    8 page Traditional 1937-modern    1st February 2008

This display is part of a collection of the first stamp issues from every country. It comprises (where available) the first stamp, commemorative, airmail, charity stamp, official and post due label. The full collection can be seen online at www.snap-dragon.com (click on the Guinness glass).

I displayed First Issues 1840-49  in the February 2007 Thematic competition and 1850-51 in the November 2008 Traditional. I intend to make gradual progress through the collection, advancing on two fronts, 1840-1936 and 1937-modern.

This period is characterised by two categories of stamp: firstly a large number of mundane, obscure and often expensive occupation overprints; secondly, the more interesting and attractive first issues of emerging nations. This display will concentrate on the latter, with only representative examples of the occupation issues.
