Abu Dhabi
The largest of the
Trucial States in the Persian Gulf. Treaty relations with Great Britain
expired on 31st Dec 1966, when Abu Dhabi took over the postal services. On
18th Jul 1971, seven of the Gulf Sheikdoms agreed o form the State of the
United Arab Emirates. The federation came into being on 1st Aug 1972. (SG) |

Peninsula on the
southern coast of Arabia. Formerly part of the Indian Empire. A Crown Colony
fro 1st Apr 1937 to 18th Jan 1963, when Aden joined the South Arabian

| Afghanistan
Afghan first issues are clearly tricky
customers. Gibbons (Simplified) starts in 1893 and ignores the first 16
designs, referring the user to the specialised volume. My Scott classic is
more helpful. The details are from Scott. I will regard my stamp as "early
Afghanistan or a copy thereof". |

| Åland Islands
Åland is an
autonomous province of Finland. From 1984, separate stamps were issued for
the area, although stamps of Finland could also still be used there.
On 1st Jan 1993, Åland assumed control of its own postal service and Finnish
