Think: A Compelling Introduction
to Philosophy
"Blackburn has produced the one book every
smart person should read to understand, and even enjoy, the key questions of
philosophy, ranging from those about free will and morality to what we can
really know about the world around us."
Blackburn (philosophy, Univ. of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill) has written this book "for people who want to think about the
big themes--knowledge, reason, truth, mind, freedom, destiny, identity, God,
goodness, justice"--but, more importantly, to think about them
philosophically. His method is to introduce what other philosophers--primarily
Plato, Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, Leibniz, Hume, and Kant--have had to say
about these themes. To make the arguments more understandable to the lay reader,
he presents the problem and then makes extensive use of analogies to ordinary
situations, thus making the philosophical point more perspicuous. To read this
book is to sit down with an engaging, highly learned conversationalist; readers
new to the subject could very well be captivated. Highly recommended for
academic and public library collections.--Leon H. Brody, U.S. Office of
Personnel Mgt. Lib., Washington, DC Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

The Jolly Rogers
o
THE JOLLY ROGERS: The Story of Tom Blackburn
and Navy Fighting Squadron VF-17 - Hardcover - by Tom Blackburn - This is the
true story of one of the Navy's foremost fighter squadrons, VF-17, and its
charismatic commander, fighter ace Tom Blackburn, in action against the Japanese
in the Solomon and Bismarck Islands during World War II> Most of us have heard
of Greg "Pappy" Boyington and his Black Sheep fighter pilots. But it
is not well known that Navy Fighting Squadron VF-17 - called the Jolly Rogers
and sporting the skull and crossbones on their engine cowlings - exceeded the
combat record of Boyington's men, shooting down 154 enemy planes in the 76 days
they were in combat in the South Pacific. Their job was to protect American
aircraft carriers and bombers in the crucial struggle for the Solomons. VF-17
pilots fought and drank as hard as any in the Pacific, and 13 of Blackburn's
men, himself included, became aces, each destroying more than five enemy
aircraft. Blackburn, only 31 years of age when he took over Squadron VF-17, was
a warm and affable character to his men, but a demanding perfectionist. Flying
the F4U Corsair, one of the first fighter planes to challenge the performance of
the Japanese Zero, Blackburn taught his pilots the fine points of both carrier
operations and aerial combat. After several devastating experiences, the
Japanese would simply avoid contact with Blackburn's fighters unless there were
bombers to stop. So the bombers flew with VF-17 to draw out the Zeros, and
eventually Blackburn and his men cleared the skies over the Solomons. Here is
the story of a modest but true American hero. To quote from the introduction by
Vice Admiral James Stockdale, USN (Ret): "If ever a man was tailor-made to
be an across-the-board role model and leader of men flying and fighting from
ships at sea, it was Tommy Blackburn." This hardcover BCE has numerous
photographs and is in good condition, quite straight and has no writing or marks
anywhere. There is some light foxing beginning only on the edges of the pages
and the dust jacket is bright and fresh in color with some edge chips and short
tears and a few yellow spots, but is still very attractive. A great addition to
any WWII or former pilot's library, and a captivating read as well.

“BIG HOG” by aviation artist Jerry Crandall is a limited
edition Artist Proof # 14 / 50 print. This print is signed by the artist and
CO-SIGNED BY VF-17 SKIPPER TOM BLACKBURN. Capt Blackburn recorded 11 confirmed,
5 probables, 3 damaged and was awarded the Navy Cross, 2 D.F.C.'s and 3 Air
medals. VF-17 was known as the "Jolly Rogers", the "Skull and
Crossbones", and "Blackburn's Irregulars". Between the end of
October 1943, and early March 1944, they downed 154 Japanese aircraft producing
13 aces in less than 5 months. The scene depicted in the print is just before
Blackburn pulled the trigger on the JAAF Tony from the 68th Fighter Regiment
based at Rabaul. Tom waited until he was very close to fire making sure the Tony
did not escape. Doug Gutenkunst flew as wingman to Blackburn in number 2 Corsair
until his tragic death in a mid-air collision a few months later. The F4U-1A was
often taped around the fuel cell in the fuselage and also on the wing panels due
to leakage and was continually re-taped as needed. The Corsairs of VF-17 had
their tail hooks re-installed for this carrier operation as they had been
land-based and had them removed earlier. Blackburn's flight had their prop hubs
painted red for ID reasons. The overall print size is 25-3/4” x 30” and the
image size is 19-1/2” x 27”. The original ‘Suggested Retail’ price for
this Artist Proof print was $225.00

PRINCIPLES OF MINERALOGY
by WILLIAM H. BLACKBURN from the University of Windsor and WILLIAM H
DENNEN from the University of Kentucky. This excellent college
Mineralogy textbook is a second edition paperback, published in 1994 by
Wm. C. Brown Publishers. The text (413 pp.) is organized in three parts
that separate theoretical, practical and descriptive matter. This provides
an organization similar to that of most mineralogy courses with lecture
and laboratory components. The eight chapters of Part One cover topics
including the nature of matter, symmetry, crystallography, crystal forms,
the nature of the atom, bonding, chemical and geometric variation in
minerals, the physical chemistry of mineral stability, the crystallization
and habits of minerals, plus a review of the relationships between
mineralogy and the broader geologic processes. [snip] |
